Nihal Nelson: The "Baila Maestro" of Sri Lanka Born in 1946, Nihal Nelson embarked on a remarkable 60-year musical journey, spanning EPs, LPs, cassettes, CDs, and digital platforms, gifting us over 4,000 songs. He's celebrated as Sri Lanka's most prolific cassette and open stage singer, with a staggering 112 cassette releases, and the pioneer of the country's first-ever CD album. Nihal Nelson isn't just a singer; he's a bona fide musical genius, equally adept as a gifted lyricist and composer. Many of his songs are the result of his creative pen and musical compositions, a testament to his versatile talent. In 2021, Nihal Nelson's hometown paid a heartfelt tribute to their cherished musical son. They renamed his home road in his honor, transforming "3rd Lane" into "Nihal Nelson Mawatha." This touching gesture forever immortalized his name, recognizing his profound contribution to the local community and the global music industry. Although he left us in 2022, his contributions live on, recognized by the prestigious Kala Bhooshana Award. His first song was released in 1963, marking the start of a remarkable career.
